Erich Hofmann

Erich Hofmann is a biologist and educator based in Wilmington, NC and the lead author of the Reptiles of North Carolina website. His research background includes the natural history, systematics, and biogeography of reptiles and amphibians, as well as molecular investigation of pitviper and rear-fanged colubrid venoms. He co-authored descriptions of two frogs and one lizard new to science.

Broadly, Erich is interested in the natural history and distribution of all taxa - especially in the NC Coastal Plain - and bridging gaps between community naturalists, citizen scientists, and academic scientists/the peer-reviewed literature. He earned his MSc. in Biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and BSc. in Biology from UNC Wilmington, and teaches biology at Cape Fear Community College when he isn't wandering outdoors looking for interesting wildlife.
