Our Mission

The mission of the NC Biodiversity Project (NCBP) is to promote public interest in North Carolina’s rich diversity of native species and ecosystems, and to support biodiversity conservation statewide.

The members of the NCBP all place high value on the natural world and are committed to its protection. We believe that we are truly in the midst of a sixth great extinction event, one that is entirely the result of human dominance and unlimited exploitation of the planet. We believe this mega-extinction can only be slowed if humans are first aware that it is happening; second, care enough both about the living planet as well as their own existence within it to spare at least a viable portion from our total exploitation; and third, have sufficient understanding of how the natural world works to become effective environmental stewards, acting for the benefit of the entire planet, ourselves included.

The NC Biodiversity Project is a tax-exempt public charity under Internal Revenue Code Section
501(c)(3).

Who We Are

The members of the NCBP include professional biologists, science educators, conservationists, nature photographers, and amateur naturalists, all of whom have long histories of studying particular groups of species.

Our Partners

The NCBP was originally formed as a collaboration with the NC Division of Parks and Recreation. We have since formed partnerships with the Southern Conservation Partners and the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program. In addition to these formal partnerships, we also work in collaboration with organizations such as the NC State Insect Museum.
