Anuridae maritima

The Entognatha are a class of tiny, wingless arthropods which along with the insects make up the subphylum known as the hexapods. While the Entognatha are all around us in great numbers, they are rarely encountered unless you go looking for them in the soil or leaf-litter, and have very good eyes (or better yet a microscope). Most familiar to the public are probably the springtails (class Collembola), which play an important role in the decomposition cycle by helping to break apart dead leaves and other organic matter. Less well known are the bristletails (Diplura) and coneheads (Protura).

The NCBP does not currently have a website for these fascinating creatures, but you can use the link above to view a checklist of the species that have been recorded in North Carolina.
