Freshwater Bivalves
North Carolina's freshwater ecosystems are home to over 60 species of freshwater bivalve mollusks, including a range of mussels and clams. Many other species have been reported but not confirmed, and the difficulty of identifying bivalves to species (or even genus) level means that this number is almost certainly an underestimate of the true diversity in our state. The NCBP does not currently have a website for this group, but you can access a checklist of documented species with the link above.
