Description: Insects eat plants—let me count the ways! There is a surprising and incredible variety of ways to eat plants, ranging from chewing them to sucking out their juices like mosquitoes do to us, to mining trails through the insides of leaves, to creating tumors on plants that create fresh food. In this workshop we’ll explore different ways animals eat plants and discuss the adaptations behind some of these methods of feeding. Then we’ll work on finding examples of herbivores in nature to provide you with some tools for contributing to science by looking closely at the small things feeding on plants in your backyards. Preregistration is required (please register online).

New larval host records, parasitoid records, and DNA barcoding data for North American leaf-mining leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomeloidea) lepidopteran Tue, 12/17/2024 - 00:00

Abstract: We discuss 46 species of North American leaf-mining leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Megalopodidae), plus one external feeder observed to spin its cocoon within the leaf mine of another insect. For each species, we review previous records of larval and adult hosts and associated hymenopteran parasitoids, augmenting these with our own observations, including the first accounts of oviposition and larval habits for many species. We present the first rearing records for 12 of these species: Anisostena californica Van Dyke, A. funesta (Baly), A. lecontii (Baly), A. perspicua (Horn), Microrhopala excavata (Olivier), Odontota floridana Butte, Stenopodius lateralis (Schaeffer), Altica lazulina LeConte, Dibolia obscura Parry, Monoxia inornata Blake, Zeugophora puberula Crotch, and Z. varians Crotch; as well as 18 new state and provincial records for chrysomeloids, although some of these are based on tentative identifications.

Abstract: Leafmining in early instars is newly reported for three species of tortricid moths in the eastern USA. Argyrotaenia amatana (Dyar) was reared from leaf-tying larvae found in association with recently vacated mines on Chiococca alba (L.) Hitchc. (Rubiaceae) in Florida. Aterpia approximana (Heinrich) was reared from a larva mining in Samolus parviflorus Raf. (Primulaceae) in North Carolina, a new host and distribution record, and larvae were found in New England in similar mines on Lysimachia ciliata L., a known host for this moth. Olethreutes osmundana (Fernald) was reared from larvae mining in Osmunda spectabilis Willd. (Osmundaceae) in North Carolina. For each species we summarize previous host, distribution, and phenological records. We also briefly describe the larvae and provide the first published photographs of them.
